Dear Helpful Kitty, Why does my cat make such strange noises when he sees a bird through the window? Wondering in Wyoming Dear Wondering, The noises you are referring to are known as “charming.” My human housemates also call it “bird cry.” It’s a series of short static chirps or clucks, and it can sound very unusual if you’ve never heard it before. Some believe these noises are used to confuse the birds and keep them off guard, so they can be more easily caught by the cat. But even if your cat can’t get outside to snatch them, he’ll still try to “charm” them through the window. I should also mention that those noises might signify that your cat needs to eat more Cheez Whiz. You might try giving him some. If you don’t have any handy, you can find it at the grocery store. Pick me up an extra can while you’re at it. I would appreciate that very much. And maybe some sliced turkey. Oh, and a can of whipped cream. Thanks, that would be very helpful. Dear Helpful Kitty, Why do my cats scratch my sofa to shreds? Decorating Disaster in Delaware Dear Disaster, Cats naturally sharpen their claws on available surfaces. This not only keeps them sharp, but it helps to crack off the old out nail layer, as well as spreading territorial scent through the paw pads. If you don't’ get them a scratching post (or even if you do), many will find less desirable places to scratch. Solutions include keeping their nails clipped (using special nail scissors you can buy at any pet store—be careful only to cut the outer tip, not the sensitive quick) , or commercially-available sticky tape you put over the places they like to scratch. A quick squirt with a water mister also tells the cat NO! Toby says do NOT declaw your cat—that’s like cutting off the first digit of your fingers. |
